In 1968 as a student at Boston College I was trained in a creative group problem-solving process called Synectics developed by William Gordon and George Prince in the 1950s. Find more with a Google search for "Synectics Gordon" How does a group shift perceptions and coalesce around a new concept? In my training I was in a small group and given a problem to solve. Our sessions were videotaped so we could watch our group behavior.Time and again even after watching our recordings we sabotaged each other's ideas. "Oh, that's a great idea...BUT..." Then we were trained in the Synectics method. After identifying the parameters of the problem and criteria for a successful solution, we took a vacation from the problem and discussed an unrelated topic. We were on the lookout for a metaphor that we could bring back to our problem solving. The metaphor would emerge in our playful exploration of the other topic, so it was easier to have co-ownership of the solution--discovered by the whole group 02:45:33 Leo Jacoby: rather than the genius of one ego among us. The playtime enhanced the group's creativity by lessening the pressure for any one member to come up with the "answer." 02:45:34 Jane: I 'feel' you Lesley.
